Carrara is known around the world for its Marble Mountains: the Apuan Alps, a real treasure in this area. The magic of the quarries is given by the almost lunar landscape, you enter the heart of the marble mountain to touch the raw material chosen by artists such as Michelangelo and Canova.
The caves can be visited, the excursion to the three marble basins of the marble quarries of Torano, Fantascritti and Colonnata is unforgettable and unique: along the route of the former Marble Railway, visitors make a spectacular journey through the Bridges of Vara and inside the suggestive galleries dug into the rock, to the discovery of the quarries that since pre-Romanesque times the white Carrara marble has been extracted. In the imperial times, blocks were transported downstream with the dangerous “lizzatura”, method, the marble blocks were lined up along a slide and were made to slip down on wooden beams, so the marble came down the valley, to the port of Luni along Via Carraia.
