HIDDEN TREASURES OF TUSCANY - STELE STATUES MUSEUM - Pontremoli

68 Kilometers away from Forte dei Marmi there is the Piagnaro castle, wonderful fortress built around 1000 to defend Pontremoli village, that hides a precious secret: the enigmatic prehistorical Stele Statues or Menhir Statues were found in the woods, in the caves and among the Lunigiana streets, becoming the symbol of this area. This 59 sculptures made by sandstone, representing men and women, mostly warriors, with a pointy head and an “U” shaped face are still today considered mysterious and magical since it’s still ignored their functions. Some think that they represent forebears heroes or protecting Gods, perhaps being collocated among necropolis and sacred areas, in woods or in cemeteries. Over the centuries The Stele Statues have been destroyed or wounded, but also very often used as a decorative element on facades of buildings and fountains.
